International Expansion

In 1984, Hyundai began exporting the Pony to Canada, where sales greatly exceeded expectations. At one point, it was the top-selling car on the Canadian market. The following year, the first generation Hyundai Sonata was introduced, and the company’s one-millionth car was built.

Hyundai's Entry into the Canadian Market

The timing of Hyundai's entry into the Canadian market in 1983 was ideal. Most automobile manufacturers had abandoned the entry-level market in favour of high-end, high-priced vehicles, leaving a large void in the market. First-time car buyers such as college students and young families were not able to find adequate, value-equipped cars that met their needs, yet were priced within their economic means. The Hyundai Pony filled this void and as result was the most successful launch of an import car in Canada. Hyundai furthered its success with the launch of the Stellar in 1985 and the Excel in 1986. Hyundai continues to improve and expand its product line.
